I've got one, I've got one...... Part 1

...........to be continued!

Hey Little Guy

Yup the annual trip down the Mighty Deschutes  came and went this year.    This year was a year of firsts which is amazing due to the fact that it was our 5th year.  First year in the new sled, new camping sight, my sammy was dry, I actually ate dinner and DaFolder was not hungover the next morning.

We headed out a little earlier than normal being we needed more time to set the sled up, but we were on the river by 9:30 and headed down river stopping at our favorite fishing spots along the way to our camping sight.  The weather was perfect for fishing with a slight overcast with no wind.  Bob again this year decided it would be in the best interest of all if he did his awesome impression of Ansel Adams while Cliffy and I set hooks in the mouths of young trouts.  With a few takes and no lands in our creels we stop for lunch and make camp at a new spot we never camped at before.  It was a great spot with a fine feeding lane out front, a nice fire pit, and a tree for shade.  We set the kitchen up which now includes a bar and proceeded to make some margaritas and have some lunch.

Bob then proceeded to school cliffy and myself in the fine art of the BB gun game.  He was so good his rules included he didn't have to make anymore rules.  Dinner was aged rib-eyes cooked over mesquite with grilled asparagus, radicchio and radishes, I would like to say a fine red wine was had with this meal but it wasn't, it deserved it though.  After dinner some more BB gun and a few shotguns were had, I would like to say by all but I can't.

Cliffy was in bed before dark, some things never change, and Bob and I stayed up and enjoyed the evening sky with a fire.  Morning came from the east and this year it brought coffee and egg sammys on the new and improved kitchen.  Delish.  Must say Cliffy did an awesome job outfitting his new ride, it's like ridding in a Caddy.  We loaded up and made our way down the river.  We caught a few, had some nice cast and some beautiful scenery.  Cliffy says four day trip in September, I say yes please.

Clayton the Sovreign Citizen

SR-71 Outback
After meeting up with ole' friend of the H7HT Clayton the other day, I have come to the decision that he is going rogue.  Not in the Sarah Palin sense, but likely in the angry Unabomber way.  Not only is he under suspicion of Elder Abuse charges in the state of Oregon but now this.
Witness exhibits 1 and 2.  His newly retrofitted Subaru is 'murdered out' as the kids call it and has been blacked out with stealth and concealment in mind.  Good thing too because inside Clayton is packing some heat.  That's right overly aggressive homeless people and wannabe gangsters in your lowered Honda, next time you think about messing with this formerly typical Outback, there will be some lead flyin'.
Looking back I blame myself.  There was a time when Clayton was happily employed at a typical job but then I brought him into the fold of my former workplace.  A workplace where everybody is sure they are consistently correct and you are wrong.  I left but he had to stay.  And look at what happened, now he is armed and reclusive behind his level 35 tint.  I can only hope that he seeks guidance from the great Lord Heston and finds the outlet he needs to push out his inner demons, maybe something involving, say, shooting ducks?
Good luck Clayton, and remember, that homeless guy was a person too.

Once again it was the group of two former and one current "Experts" off to the river for some fishing action.  Cliffy showed up with no trailer this year, only a pickup full of gear and his new inflatable boat stuffed in the back.  We arrived without incident.
The put in was all changed up with the inflation of the boat and packing new items for the trip.  Careful to have dry bags and items that would not be affected by the self-bailing floor, we set out on the river with light overcast and nice temps.  Beers were cracked soon after.  The first fishing spot was time for me to take some pictures and Fred and Cliffy to get their first casts under their belt.  I had planed to get the big digital SLR from Clayton the night before but there had been some lack of communication and this years pics were taken by a regular digital.  I think they turned out well anyway.
The intrepid guide
A bit down the river we stopped again and I watched Cliffy start to reel in the first fish of the day.  The fish had other ideas and jumped the hook but I was ready with the camera to record the event.  I think it was also at this spot that Fred G almost got another, but that fish too got away.  I'm sure they were both 'that big'.  A few more stops in we decided to hit the first campsite which we have never camped at before.  A new look for a new year.  More to come....

For the last four years the Charter members of the HOY7 hunting team have made the pilgrimage to the mighty Deschutes River in central Oregon.  This year will be no different.  Well, maybe a little different.  Cliffy has purchased a new boat for the excursion this year.  The old drift boat has been replaced by a self bailing raft that has been guaranteed to carry more gear while at the same time keeping our feet constantly wet.  Good job Cliffy.

Years past have brought us many fine opportunities to catch fish, (but we didn't).  We also have seen many scenic and picturesque views of the canyon walls and lush shoreline vistas.  And of course the chance to shoot cans hanging from trees and laying on nearby obstacles.  And camaraderie. Always the camaraderie.

So it's with anticipation, and a litte bit of concern for my liver, that I head out tomorrow morning for the  great state of Oregon.  We at the H7Ht hope to bring you the best in pictures and commentary about our adventures and potential disasters in order to keep you entertained.  In the meantime enjoy this picture that I think sums up last years trip.
Mighty we are.
