The dog days of summer are code
They mean that dogs
Are thinking about getting on the road
Gravel highways
Leading them to a brand new place
Where ducks
Fly into the blind with their subtle grace
That they depend on for fun
Have trained
And loaded up their camo favorite gun
And soon
They get to jump from great boats
Towards a duck
Or a goose, or some other dead thing that floats
They retrieve
The smell
And the taste of what they've got
Is the reason
That every tough thing that they do
Brings happiness
To each dog and their hunt masters too
And the reward
Being all that they expect
Is a pet
Or a 'good dog' cause that's all that they get
Dedicated to Peat, Remmington, Ruger, Clyde, Harley, Meah and Abigail.
